Green Power To Offset Ontario's Polluting Power PlantsIn 2005 Canada's energy capacity was about 61,500 mega watts Ontario's peak power needs in 2008 were about 27,000MW, 21,000MW of which is generated by Ontario Power Generation's fleet of nuclear, fossil and hydro electric plants. 15,000 MW of this total are produced by nuclear and fossil fuel burning plants. This high demand makes it very difficult, but still possible to offset our power demand with green energy production. Currently Ontario is ready to spend tens of billions on nuclear energy as a cost effieciant way to generate electricity, but there is a dangerous environmental cost of creating nuclear waste. Although nuclear waste can be stored it needs to remain saftly stored for millions of years before it can be introduced back into our environment, and nuclear plants themselves have an effect on the safty of the surrounding areas. Green energy has proven to be a sufficiant way to offset our power needs, with less environmental impact than using nuclear technologies or by adding any more fossil burning stations to Ontario. Ranking from highest to lowest energy production are some green alternatives to our energy crisis: Hydro Electric Power - Ontarios hydro electric plants have an operating capacity of about 1000 MW. The Three Gorges dam is being built in china, at a price tag of $25 billion, this hydro electric plant should supply up to 18,000 MW of power. Solar Power - Sarnia's solar project will demonstrate 80 MW @ a cost of 450 million. We would need 375 of these plants to meet Ontario's needs costing about $168 billion Wind Power - 1 MW turbine costs about $1.5 Million, If we placed 30,000 windmills across Ontario this would cost $45 billion. Biomass Energy - biomass is a good way to supplement the fossil fuel cost by burning renewable gases instead and cutting emissions from tradition fossil fuel plants. Biomass energy has great potential but its variety of applications make it difficult estimate as cost for primary source of energy.
